What should you know about Waymo accidents?

On Behalf of | May 22, 2026 | Automobile Accidents

Waymo vehicles are self-driving vehicles that are touted as being safe and easy ways for people to get around. While that might sound positive, it can actually be unsafe because these vehicles don’t have a human driver in the vehicle. Instead, these vehicles use remote agents for oversight.

The fact that Waymo vehicles don’t have human drivers poses a challenge if one is involved in a crash. When pedestrians, bicyclists, drivers or occupants of any vehicle are injured, they may file a personal injury claim. One part of these cases is determining who’s at fault so that the matter of financial damages can be addressed.

Determining fault can be more complicated

The central question in crash cases involving Waymo vehicles is the same as in any other crash. This is what caused the crash. For self-driving vehicles, some answers to this include sensors, road conditions, vehicle data, software or automated driving technology. Human conduct can also be a cause, particularly if there was something the remote agent did that contributed to the wreck.

When you’re involved in one of these crashes, the vehicle data is often one of the primary sources of information. This will likely show certain driving events, activities and statistics. System status, braking, steering, speed, and sensor activities are some examples of data that might be important since they can show what happened in the time leading up to the crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requires that self-driving crashes be reported by manufacturers and operators. This includes vehicles with Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems. Not only does this provide information for statistics, but it can also show patterns with crashes in vehicles with certain components, such as software programs or other automated driving technology, which can be helpful in a personal injury claim.

Victims of crashes that involve a self-driving vehicle are facing a complex undertaking if they opt to pursue a compensation claim. Laws are still evolving in this area, and the technology can be complicated. Working with someone familiar with the intersection of automated driving technology and vehicle crashes is beneficial to anyone in this position.
